Portobello Road No. 171
Nestled away on the top two floors of a 19th century public house on London's world famous Portobello Road is The Ginstitute: London's second-smallest museum and home to a 30L alembic still affectionately dubbed Copernicus the Second. While patrons of the Ginstitute are treated to a whirlwind adventure through the history of gin (lubrication is included along with the tour), proprietors Ged, Jake and Paul decided that the museum was not complete without its own brand of gin to bear the Portobello Road name, and thus set out to create Portobello Road No. 171 London Dry Gin. In the nine months of experimentation that followed, the character of the gin was slowly created. The base spirit for Portobello Road s distilled in England from English-grown wheat, and the gin's nine botanical ingredients come from around the world juniper berries and orris from Tuscany, Spanish lemon peels, bitter orange peels from Haiti or Morocco, nutmeg from Indonesia and cassia bark from South East Asia. Bottled at a punchy 42% ABV, these ingredients combine to create a uniquely versatile gin with a robust aroma of juniper which leads to a sustained, fresh citrus character on the palate. The finish is sweet and peppery, with lasting notes of licorice and nutmeg. Portobello Road No. 171 London Dry Gin won a Gold Medal at the 2014 San Francisco World Spirits Competition pick up a bottle today!
