Mezcalero No. 13
Mezcal is often referred to as the grandfather of tequila because it's centuries older, but that's not completely accurate tequila is made from blue agave near Tequila, Mexico, while mezcal can be made from agave grown elsewhere in Mexico. Mezcalero is distilled from at least 50% wild or semi-wild agave.
The agave is then cut into chunks and roasted in a fire pit. After roasting, they are crushed to extract the juice, fermented in small vertical wooden vats, then double distilled in small pot stills. It takes a month of continuous labor to produce a single batch of Mezcalero, usually 600-700 bottles.
Mezcalero No. 13 is distilled from wild agave Tepeztate (agave marmorata) and Tobal (agave potatorum) from Alipus distiller Don Luis Cruz of San Luis del Rio. The Tepeztate adds a bold and spicy flavor to the mezcal while the Tobal balances with a rich and smooth finish.
