The Store begins in 1822 in remote and isolated Livet valley that made it ideal for illicit distillation. This is where our founder George Smith learned his craft. Hidden away from the Customs Officers and soldiers amongst the hills and abundant springs, George had time to distill slowly making a whisky that would soon become world renowned. In August 1822, King George IV arrived in Scotland for a state visit and asked to try a drop of the infamous Glenlivet whisky. An illegal dram it was, but even that didn’t stop the King. 

By the late ‘30’s, The Glenlivet distillery was producing more than 200 gallons a week. This expansion meant our founder would soon need more employees. A few years later, Andrew Ushers & Sons of Edinburgh joined as sales agents, helping spread the word of the whisky.

The origin of this whisky's deep and satisfying flavor stems from a maturation technique pioneered by The Glenlivet, known as Selective Maturation.

A portion of the mature spirit is transferred to virgin oak casks made from French Limousin oak, the same casks that are used for maturing fine French wines and cognacs. This genus of oak adds spiciness, without being overpowering.

The Glenlivet's Master Distiller, Alan Winchester, has a wealth of quality casks to choose from when creating this complex expression, each of which has rested a minimum of 18 years in oak. The mix of casks - American and European oak, first and second fill - all play their parts to create this whisky, our single most awarded expression, and its unique character. The European oak adds spicy notes and complexity and the first-fill American oak casks add the tropical fruitiness that makes it unmistakably The Glenlivet in style. Its golden hue bears testimony to its 18 years very well spent maturing.

Our 21 Year Old Archive has over two decades of distilling expertise in every bottle. A variety of casks complete the flavor, with a noticeable sherry influence. Each cask is nosed and approved by Master Distiller Alan Winchester, and every batch is unique with subtle differences from those that came before and those still to follow.

Creating this exceptional whisky requires craftsmanship and mastery of centuries old traditions.

The finest raw ingredients, mastery of the art of distilling premier spirits and the selection of only the finest oak casks, each over 25 years of age and chosen at the peak of maturation.

The casks are married together in batches and then finished in sherry casks for final flourish of spice, depth and complexity.

Ndurra Peated Whisky Cask Finish draws its inspiration from the historic traditions of whisky making at The Glenlivet, where peat smoke was originally used to dry the malted barley. But this is a contemporary take on a traditional flavor. The origin of this distinctive flavor comes not from the malting process but instead through maturation. The matured whisky is finished in casks that have previously held heavily peated Scotch whisky. This creates a gentle, aromatic smokiness, a completely new flavor for The Glenlivet but married together with the smooth fruitiness of our house style.

To create whisky with a tropical feel, our makers finished a portion of our smooth whiskyin barrels that previously held Caribbean rum. The result is a well-balanced and exceptionally smooth whisky. Single malt, meet summer.

During the early 19th century, illegal distilleries were commonplace throughout the Speyside region of Scotland. In 1823, however, Alexander Gordon pushed the Excise Act of 1823 through Parliament. The Excise Act allowed illegal distillers throughout Scotland to apply for and obtain licenses to legally distill spirits. In 1824, a businessman named George Smith applied for one of the first licenses in the Speyside region of Scotland and opened the doors to The Glenlivet Distillery. For nearly two centuries, The Glenlivet Distillery has been producing the "single malt whisky that started it all." The Glenlivet Single Malt Scotch Whisky is made using barley sourced from Crisp Maltings, Portgordon (Portgordon is a village in Moray, Scotland). After the barley has been malted and mashed, it is fermented in wooden washbacks for approximately two days. The wooden washbacks used by The Glenlivet are more difficult and expensive to maintain as compared to the stainless steel washbacks used by most Scottish distilleries, but impart a distinctive, floral quality to the whisky. After the barley has been fermented, it is distilled twice first through Glenlivet's wash still, and then again through Glenlivet's spirits still. Originally designed by George Smith, the copper-pot stills have a unique, lantern-like shape, which encourages contact between the whisky and the copper (the copper strips the whisky of any impurities it may have, and provides for a lighter and more pure flavor profile). In addition, the height of the stills ensures only the lightest vapors are condensed, and makes for a more delicate and elegant whisky. Recently, folks at The Glenlivet have been experimenting with mysterious releases without tasting notes and cask information. Spectra is one such limited-edition box set that contains a selection of 3 distinct 200ml single malt bottles. The first hints at a fruity expression, the second promises a smoky and briny experience, and the last holds a creamy sweetness. Each expression showcases The Glenlivet's signature style and presents a tasting challenge in the form of a digital experience a journey that starts by scanning the provided QR code.
