Highland Park The Dark

Highland Park

The dark and light are concepts that exist in opposition, yet together create a perfect balance, and inspired our limited edition releases of the same name. The Dark 17 Year Old is a whisky for reflection; in it we celebrate autumn and winter in Orkney – a time to escape from wild weather outside and gather with friends and family, sharing long nights of conversation and laughter around the fire. A rich and powerful single malt whisky, The Dark has been matured exclusively in sherry seasoned oak casks and is presented in an embossed black glass bottle. The serpent dragon design on takes its inspiration from the great Norse sagas, embracing both the high sun of the summer solstice and the low sun of the winter solstice, while the runic writing reflects the ancient carvings of our Viking ancestors, here in Orkney. ‘Embernectar’ is the word we coined to describe this whisky’s unique flavour profile. It’s definitely easier than saying ‘distant campfires, toasted almonds, dried fruits, cinnamon, cedarwood, fruitcake and light smoke’. We’ve been crafting our award-winning whisky at the Highland Park Distillery in Kirkwall, Orkney, since 1798. Age, experience and respect for tradition may define our whisky, but it’s Orkney that sets it apart. Something magic happens here and the result is the wild harmony of flavours found in our whisky.

Highland Park Twisted Tattoo 16 Year Old Scotch Whisky

Highland Park

750 ml | 46.7% ABV
Whiskey | Scotch
Established in 1798, Highland Park is a renowned single malt Scotch whisky from Orkney, a remote set of islands off the far North coast of Scotland. Highland Park's range of single malt whiskies is consistently acclaimed by whisky connoisseurs from around the world, with the brand receiving the accolade of Best Spirit in the World from industry expert, Paul Pacult, on three separate occasions and the Ultimate Spirits Challenge top honor, the Chairman's trophy for Best in Category for the last 4 years.

Twisted Tattoo is the new 16 year old limited edition from Highland Park. Rich and full-bodied, this whisky has been crafted using an innovative combination of Spanish Rioja seasoned casks and first-fill bourbon casks a first for the distillery. The packaging for this edition was designed by Danish tattoo artist Colin Dale who is renowned for his creations using the classic stick and poke tattoo technique. This non-electric method is done freestyle with needle and ink, building each intricate design dot by dot.

We have a tradition of defying convention and that’s how we came to create this distinct and bold single malt whisky and its equally distinct and bold packaging.

The name and design was inspired by the Norse legend of the Midgard serpent, which grew so large it could twist right around the earth to bite its own tail; and we developed the packaging in partnership with Danish tattoo artist, Colin Dale, who uses both ancient and modern tattooing techniques to tell stories on the skin.

Using first-fill Rioja casks in combination with refill casks was a first for Highland Park and the result is a rich and contemporary single malt whisky with very distinctive character. You’ll find generous layers of sweet vanilla, sun-ripened peaches, summer berries and full-bodied red wine, combined on gust of heather-rich peat smoke.

Situated in the Orkney archipelago in Northern Scotland, Highland Park Distillery was founded in 1798 by Magnus Eunson. The name of the distillery is derived not from the region of Scotland known as The Highlands the Orkney islands are not a part of The Highlands but rather from the region known as High Park, where the distillery was founded. Today, over two centuries after its founding, Highland Park Distillery remains one of the few Scottish distilleries that continues to hand-turn, malt, and peat its own barley. "You have to be careful here on the malting floor," says Eric Tait, Highland Park's Maltman. "You find it can get a wee bit slippery underneath. I have to turn the malt every eight hours to prevent the roots from getting tangled and to get it all aerated properly. The airing also helps it to grow. The malt will be on the floor for seven days, and I'm running five floors at the moment." After malting the barley, Highland Park Distillery smokes it using peat sourced from Hobbister Moor, a peat bog located approximately seven miles from the distillery. Hobbister Moor peat is sourced from floral heather bushes, which burn hotter and cleaner than the grassy peats of Islay. Also, the peat sourced from Hobbister Moor has greater derivatives of carbohydrates and a lower concentration of lignin than peat from Islay, giving Highland Park's peat a unique chemical fingerprint. The peat sourced from Hobbister Moor is "absolutely fundamental in understanding the flavor of Highland Park Whisky," says Russell Anderson, the distillery manager. Together with Orkney's unique environment (the temperate, moist climate of the archipelago results in an even maturation process), the peat gives Highland Park Whisky its traditional malty flavors that are tempered by just a subtle touch of smoke. Highland Park is proud to introduce Highland Park Sren 26 Year, an exclusive release of 1,206 bottles in partnership with renowned photographer, Sren Solkr. Rich and smoky, the whisky has been crafted from a combination of exceptional casks hand-selected by Master Whisky Maker, Gordon Motion. This special edition is housed in a bespoke leather box paired with an exclusive leather-bound book showcasing photographic work from the 26 years of Sren's career. matured predominantly in sherry-seasoned American oak casks and first fill Bourbon casks this whisky has a rich and spicy flavor with light heathery peat smoke and a long, lingering finish.

Highland Park is an incredible longstanding whisky house, and they pride themselves on their rich Norse heritage, an essence which is reflected in their craft. Today, over two centuries after its founding, Highland Park Distillery remains one of the few Scottish distilleries that continues to hand-turn, malt, and peat its own barley, using locally cut peat from the nearby Hobbister Moor. The malt is peated to 20 parts per million phenols, and then mixed with unpeated malt produced on the Scottish mainland. "You have to be careful here on the malting floor," says Eric Tait, Highland Park's Maltman. "You find it can get a wee bit slippery underneath. I have to turn the malt every eight hours to prevent the roots getting tangled and to get it all aerated properly. The airing also helps it to grow. Fans of Highland Park and cask-strength whisky will be glad to know that the distillery is adding annual cask-strength releases to their permanent lineup. Highland Park Cask Strength No.1 is the first in the series that is meant to showcase the casks' influence in its pure, unadulterated form. "I want to give everyone who loves Highland Park the chance to experience our single malt whisky in its purest form by bottling 'straight from the cask but allowing you to choose the strength you want to drink this special single malt," says Master Whisky Maker Gordon Motion. The different-aged sherry-seasoned American oak casks are hand-selected by him and the spirit is bottled without chill-filtration at 126.6 proof.
